Glimpses of a Golden Age: American Skiing, 1955-1966.
In the winter of 1955–56, just 66 ski areas operated across the United States, according to the leading ski industry journal of the time. But by 1965–66—just a decade later—that number had skyrocketed to 543, not including hills served only by rope tows.
The peak of this ski area construction boom came in 1963–64, when a record 66 resorts opened in a single season. Soon after, the focus shifted from building entirely new areas to expanding existing ones. This unprecedented growth was fueled by postwar prosperity, improved transportation, and soaring interest in skiing. It also spurred a wave of innovation—in everything from ski technique and instruction to clothing, equipment, and resort housing.
