Donating to the New England Ski Museum Collection
Special Notice – We Are Not Currently Accepting Physical Donations
Thank you for considering donating to the New England Ski Museum! We truly appreciate your support. However, due to space limitations, we are unable to accept physical donations at this time. We understand this may be disappointing, and we’re here to assist you. If you have any questions regarding donations, please feel free to reach out to our curator at curator@skimuseum.org.
While we are not accepting physical donations right now, we kindly ask you to consider making a monetary donation instead. This will help us better care for our collection.
Please note that the information below is relevant for when we begin accepting donations at some point in the future. Thank you for your understanding.
The New England Ski Museum has a rich history of preserving skiing’s legacy, and our collections have been built with the generous support of public donations. Over the years, we’ve acquired many iconic items that capture the spirit and history of skiing, from rare artifacts to publications like Ski, Skiing, Ski Bulletin, and American Ski Annual. However, due to limited storage space, we typically limit our collection to no more than two copies of most items.
If you’re considering donating materials to the Museum, we kindly ask that you contact us beforehand to ensure your contribution aligns with our collection needs. This helps us continue to preserve skiing’s history in the most efficient way possible.
The Donation Process
We’ve designed a straightforward and respectful process for accepting donations:
- Temporary Receipt: When an item is received, a Temporary Receipt is completed and signed by both the Museum and the donor.
- Evaluation Period: Within a few weeks, the Museum evaluates the item to determine whether it will be accepted into the collection.
- If Accepted: A formal letter of acknowledgment, along with two copies of the Deed of Gift, will be sent to you. Please return one signed copy of the Deed of Gift to the Museum while retaining the other for your records. The item will also be assigned a unique accession number for tracking and documentation.
- If Declined: Items that are not accepted will either be returned to the donor or disposed of, as per the donor’s preferences recorded on the Temporary Receipt.
Note: You can find a PDF of the Temporary Custody Receipt & Deed of Gift here.
Appraisals
To comply with tax regulations and maintain objectivity, the New England Ski Museum cannot provide appraisals or assign a dollar value to donated items. If you require an appraisal, we encourage you to consult an independent expert prior to donation.
Preserving the Legacy
Please note that artifacts on display represent only a small portion of the Museum’s total collection. While we cannot guarantee when or if a donated item will be featured in an exhibit, our staff and board work diligently to preserve materials for future researchers and exhibit creators. Many artifacts we accept today may hold significance for generations to come, even if they don’t immediately appear in our exhibitions.
